Patna: The Bihar transport department has reduced the time limit for payment of traffic violation fines from 90 days to 45 days as part of a stricter enforcement policy.
Officials said vehicle owners who fail to clear challans within the revised deadline could face cancellation or suspension of key documents, including registration certificates (RC), driving licences, insurance and pollution under control (PUC) certificates.
Action against unpaid challans
According to the department, many motorists continue to delay payment of fines despite repeated notices.
Officials also said some vehicle owners manage to obtain pollution certificates through unofficial means even after pending violations. The department warned that such certificates would be cancelled if irregularities are detected during inspections.
Authorities added that action could also be taken against pollution testing centres found issuing certificates improperly.
Training for repeat offenders
The transport department said stricter monitoring of drivers and vehicles would be implemented across the state.
Drivers repeatedly violating traffic rules may be required to undergo training sessions at district transport offices. Officials said driving licences of repeat offenders could be seized until the training process is completed.
The initiative had earlier been introduced in Patna and a few other districts on a pilot basis.
Statewide implementation planned
Officials said the new enforcement measures are expected to be expanded to all district transport offices in Bihar within the next one to two months.
The department stated that the move is aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations and strengthening road safety enforcement across the state.
