Patna: The Bihar government has announced an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of six people killed in a road accident in Khagaria district. The decision was taken following a directive from Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
The Chief Minister expressed grief over the incident and instructed officials to ensure proper medical care for those injured. Authorities said the relief amount will be provided through the Disaster Management Department.
Accident on NH-31 Claims Six Lives
The accident took place on Monday afternoon at Thatha under the Mansi police station area on NH-31. According to police and eyewitness accounts, a speeding truck lost control and first hit an auto-rickshaw before colliding with a pickup van and a Safari vehicle.
The impact caused severe damage to the auto-rickshaw, leading to the immediate death of all six occupants.
Victims and Injuries Reported
Police confirmed that the deceased include two women, two children and two men. By late evening, identification of two victims had been completed.
At least eight others sustained serious injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals with the help of local residents and police teams.
Officials said the auto-rickshaw was travelling from Khagaria towards Gogri when the accident occurred near a roadside eatery.
Driver Flees After Collision
Preliminary reports suggest that the truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot after the crash. Police have launched an investigation and efforts are underway to trace the driver.
Administration Response
District officials have been directed to monitor treatment of the injured and coordinate relief measures. The state government has reiterated its commitment to provide financial assistance to the affected families under disaster relief norms.
Local residents expressed concern over repeated accidents on the stretch, raising questions about road safety and traffic regulation enforcement.
