Patna: The Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) is preparing to restrict the sale of meat in open and unhygienic conditions as part of a major initiative to modernize meat processing and supply systems in the city. Bihar’s first high-tech slaughterhouse is set to be established in Patna to ensure hygienic meat supply to consumers.
According to officials, the proposed slaughterhouse will be constructed on the outskirts of the city, with Ramchak Bairiya being considered as one of the possible locations. The project will be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) model.
The civic body said the move aims to bring the meat trade under a modern and scientifically managed system. Meat from the slaughterhouse will be transported to licensed shops through insulated vehicles to maintain hygiene and quality standards.
Special facilities such as a blood processing unit, effluent treatment plant (ETP) and scientific waste management systems will be included in the modern slaughterhouse. Animal waste and remains will be disposed of in accordance with environmental standards.
PMC officials said a survey was conducted across the city to assess the current condition of meat and fish shops. During the survey, 1,420 meat and fish shops were identified. Of these, 937 shops were found to be operating illegally, while only 90 shops possessed valid licenses.
The corporation has already floated tenders for the construction of the modern closed-environment slaughterhouse.
The Patna Municipal Corporation stated that the sale of meat in open and unhygienic environments poses a serious threat to public health. As a result, the civic body has launched a special drive against illegal shops operating in the city.
Officials said notices have been issued to 1,234 shopkeepers for renewal of their licenses. In the coming months, only registered shops will be allowed to receive authorized meat supply from the new slaughterhouse system.
The proposed arrangement is expected to introduce a cleaner, safer and regulated meat supply chain in the Bihar capital.
