Patna: The Railways has issued a tender for the construction of a washing pit and shunting line at Laukaha Bazar railway station in  Madhubani district, paving the way for expanded rail operations in the border region adjoining Nepal.
The information was shared by Janata Dal (United) working president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha on social media platform X.
Project likely to be completed in 15 months
According to Jha, the construction work is expected to be completed within 15 months after the tender process is finalised. The project is likely to become operational by the latter half of 2027.
Laukaha Bazar railway station is located close to the India-Nepal border. Railway officials expect that the new washing pit facility will enable the operation of long-distance trains from the station.
At present, rail services from the station are limited. The proposed infrastructure is expected to benefit passengers from north Bihar and neighbouring border districts by improving direct rail connectivity.
Push for better rail connectivity in north Bihar
The development is also expected to support trade, tourism and local economic activity in the region.
Jha said he had met Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on September 12, 2024 and submitted a memorandum seeking expansion of the rail network in north Bihar, an increase in train services, and improvement in passenger amenities.
The memorandum also included the demand for construction of a washing pit at Laukaha Bazar station. Jha described the project as an important step towards the development of Mithilanchal and border areas, and thanked the railway minister for the approval.
