Patna: Construction work on a new four-lane riverfront road running parallel to the JP Ganga Path is progressing rapidly in Patna, with officials aiming to improve connectivity in Patna City while reducing the impact of monsoon flooding on traffic movement.
The road stretches from Bhadra Ghat to Didarganj along the banks of the Ganga and forms part of a larger riverfront infrastructure project in the state capital.
Embankment Being Built to Prevent Flooding
Authorities are simultaneously constructing an embankment along the riverbank to protect the road from inundation during the monsoon season.
Officials said the embankment was intended to:
- Prevent floodwaters from entering the road corridor
- Ensure uninterrupted traffic movement during heavy rains
- Strengthen riverbank protection infrastructure
Excavation work for the embankment is currently underway beyond Naujar Ghat.
Riverfront Ghats and Walkways Draw Visitors
The project also includes the construction of new ghats and walkways along the Ganga between Bhadra Ghat and Chitragupta Mandir Ghat.
According to local residents:
- The riverfront has witnessed a sharp rise in visitors during mornings and evenings
- Newly developed ghats have enhanced the visual appeal of the area
- Devotees are expected to benefit during the Chhath festival
People visiting the riverfront were seen spending time along the walkways overlooking the Ganga.
Elevated Road Construction Underway
East of Bhadra Ghat, work on an elevated two-lane road is also progressing.
Officials said:
- Road construction is underway near Damrahi Ghat
- Work is continuing between Khajekalan Ghat and Kangan Ghat
- The four-lane stretch from Bhadra Ghat to Kangan Ghat is being developed on the northern side of the river
- Beyond Kangan Ghat up to Didarganj, construction is taking place on both sides
Project Expected to Ease Patna Traffic
Residents said the road could significantly reduce congestion in Patna City after completion.
According to locals, the corridor is expected to:
- Reduce pressure on Ashok Rajpath
- Improve traffic flow in densely populated areas
- Provide faster connectivity to eastern parts of Patna
Multiple Access Points Planned
The new riverfront road will connect with JP Ganga Path at several major points, including:
- Gai Ghat
- Bhadra Ghat
- Kangan Ghat
- Patna City Ghat
- Didarganj
Officials said commuters travelling on lower-level roads would also gain easier access to National Highway 30 through routes connected to Patna Ghat and Didarganj.
The project is expected to become a key urban mobility corridor along the Ganga riverfront in Patna.
