A new Bailey bridge constructed parallel to the Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur is set to open for vehicular movement from Sunday morning, according to district authorities.
The bridge has been developed to reduce traffic congestion on the Vikramshila Setu, a key link connecting Bhagalpur with several districts in the Seemanchal region. The district administration and police department said all operational and security arrangements have been completed ahead of the launch.
Final trial scheduled before opening
Officials said a final trial run will be conducted on Saturday evening before regular traffic is allowed on the bridge.
The trial will involve vehicles of administrative and police officials, along with selected local citizens, to assess the bridge’s structural stability, safety measures and operational readiness.
Vehicle restrictions in place
Addressing a press conference on Friday, Bhagalpur District Magistrate Nawal Kishore Choudhary and Senior Superintendent of Police Pramod Kumar outlined the operational framework for the bridge.
Authorities said only light and medium-category vehicles will be permitted initially. Vehicles carrying up to 10 tonnes will be allowed to cross the bridge, while passenger vehicles with a seating capacity of 10 to 12 people will also be permitted.
Heavy vehicles will not be allowed at this stage.
Traffic management and safety measures
To ensure smooth movement and prevent congestion, police and traffic personnel will be deployed at both ends of the bridge.
Vehicles will be regulated through a queue-based system and allowed to cross in a controlled manner. Officials said the arrangement is intended to minimise pressure on the structure and reduce the risk of accidents.
The maximum speed limit on the bridge has been fixed at 40 kmph. Motorists have been advised to comply with traffic regulations and follow instructions issued by authorities.
Minister to inspect bridge
Bihar Road Construction Minister E Shailendra is scheduled to visit Bhagalpur on Saturday to inspect the bridge and review construction quality.
The minister is expected to formally flag off vehicular operations on Sunday.
Relief expected for commuters
The Bailey bridge has been constructed as an alternative route to address increasing traffic pressure and frequent congestion on the Vikramshila Setu.
Authorities expect the new facility to benefit commuters travelling between Bhagalpur and districts including Katihar, Purnia, Araria and Kishanganj, while improving traffic flow and connectivity across the region.
