Patna: The Bihar government has amended recruitment rules for stenographer posts, reducing the minimum age for direct recruitment from 21 years to 18 years and cutting the probation period from two years to one year.
The decision is aimed at expanding employment opportunities for young people and accelerating the filling of vacancies in government departments.
Under the revised rules, candidates who have completed Intermediate or an equivalent qualification will now be eligible to apply for stenographer positions immediately after attaining the age of 18.
Officials said the changes are expected to benefit a large number of aspirants who were previously unable to apply because of the higher minimum age requirement.
More Opportunities for Young Candidates
The state government believes that lowering the age threshold will widen the pool of eligible applicants and enable qualified candidates to enter government service earlier in their careers.
The move is also expected to help departments fill vacancies more efficiently by attracting a larger number of applicants during recruitment drives.
Candidates preparing for competitive examinations have welcomed the decision, saying it will provide earlier access to government employment opportunities.
Experts noted that most skill-based recruitment examinations are open to candidates after they turn 18, making the revised age limit more aligned with existing educational and professional pathways.
Probation Period Reduced to One Year
Alongside the age relaxation, the government has shortened the probation period for newly appointed stenographers from two years to one year.
Previously, candidates had to complete a two-year probation period before their services were confirmed. Under the new rules, employees will attain permanent status after one year, allowing them to access service-related benefits sooner.
Officials believe the change will improve employee confidence and job satisfaction while reducing the waiting period for service confirmation.
Part of Wider Employment Reforms
The amendment is being viewed as part of Bihar’s broader effort to create more employment opportunities and simplify recruitment procedures across government departments.
The state government has conducted several large-scale recruitment drives in recent years and has introduced a series of reforms aimed at making hiring processes more efficient and youth-friendly.
Government sources said all future stenographer recruitment exercises will be conducted under the revised rules.
Expected Impact on Administration
Experts say the recruitment of younger candidates could help departments build a more experienced workforce over the long term, as employees will have longer service careers.
They also believe that a shorter probation period could improve motivation and productivity among newly recruited staff.
The government expects the revised rules to strengthen administrative efficiency while providing greater employment opportunities for young people across Bihar.
