Patna: Families planning weddings, housewarming ceremonies, Mundan, Janeu or Bhumi Pujan have a limited window to complete these rituals, with auspicious dates available only until July 12, according to Hindu almanacs.

After this period, the four-month observance of Chaturmas will begin, during which marriages and other auspicious ceremonies are traditionally not performed. The pause will continue until Devotthan Ekadashi on November 20, when the wedding season resumes.

Chaturmas to Begin from July 25

Astrologer said Chaturmas will commence on Devashayan Ekadashi, which falls on July 25 this year during the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Ashadh month.

According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu enters Yoganidra (cosmic slumber) on this day and remains in that state for four months. The period concludes on November 20 with Devotthan Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu is believed to awaken, allowing auspicious ceremonies to resume.

Auspicious Wedding Dates Before the Hiatus

Different Hindu almanacs list slightly different wedding dates before Chaturmas.

According to the Banarasi Panchang, auspicious wedding dates are:

  • June: 28, 29
  • July: 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12

The Mithila Panchang lists the following dates:

  • June: 28, 29
  • July: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 12

After Chaturmas concludes, astrologers say there will be 19 auspicious wedding dates across November and December.

Why Weddings are Avoided During Chaturmas

According to Hindu tradition, Lord Vishnu enters a state of divine slumber during Chaturmas, while the responsibility for the universe is believed to rest with Lord Shiva.

Religious scholars also associate the period with the Sun’s transition into Dakshinayan and changes in planetary positions, making it unsuitable for marriages and other auspicious ceremonies. Instead, devotees are encouraged to focus on religious observances, fasting and spiritual practices.

Wedding Season to Resume in November

Auspicious ceremonies will resume on November 20 with Devotthan Ekadashi, marking the symbolic awakening of Lord Vishnu.

The occasion is traditionally observed with the blowing of conch shells, ringing of bells and devotional prayers in temples and homes. The reopening of the wedding calendar is expected to usher in a busy marriage season through November and December.
