Patna: The Bihar Transport Department has introduced an AI-enabled e-challan system at 41 toll plazas across the state, including Patna, in a major step towards digitising traffic enforcement and improving road safety. Sensor-based high-tech CCTV cameras have been installed at all toll plazas to automate the detection of traffic violations.
The system has already become operational at more than 30 toll plazas, while the remaining 11 locations are expected to be integrated in July.
Scrapped and Unfit Vehicles to Be Tracked
According to the Transport Department, the new e-detection system will not only make the challan process more transparent but will also identify vehicles that have been declared unfit or scrapped yet continue to operate on public roads.
Officials said the technology will enable quicker enforcement action against such vehicles, reducing the risk of accidents caused by mechanically unfit vehicles.
How the E-Detection System Works
The AI-powered system uses high-resolution cameras installed at toll plazas to monitor vehicles moving at high speed. As a vehicle passes through the toll gate, its registration number is automatically scanned and matched with the government’s vehicle database.
If the system detects a traffic rule violation or finds pending vehicle documents, it automatically generates an e-challan without any manual intervention.
Digital Enforcement to Improve Transparency
The Transport Department believes the fully digital mechanism will eliminate the scope for corruption and influence in the challan process. It will also help authorities accurately capture the registration numbers of speeding vehicles and assist in identifying stolen or suspicious vehicles.
The department expects the technology-driven enforcement system to improve compliance with traffic rules while enhancing road safety across Bihar.
