New Delhi: Emerging research suggests that a father’s alcohol consumption before conception may influence the health of future children by affecting sperm quality and increasing the risk of certain birth defects and developmental disorders.
While public health advice has traditionally focused on maternal health during pregnancy, researchers say evidence is growing that paternal lifestyle factors, including alcohol consumption, may also play a role in fetal development.
Alcohol May Affect Sperm Health
According to researchers, alcohol can alter the genetic and molecular processes within sperm cells before conception.
Studies suggest that these changes may affect normal fetal development, potentially increasing the likelihood of congenital abnormalities. Researchers say the biological effects of alcohol on sperm can persist for several weeks after consumption.
Increased Risk Of Developmental Disorders
Medical studies have linked heavy paternal alcohol consumption before conception with a higher risk of physical and developmental conditions in children.
Researchers have reported associations with congenital heart defects, cleft lip, intestinal abnormalities, delayed cognitive development and learning difficulties. However, experts note that these studies identify an increased risk rather than proving that alcohol directly causes these conditions in every case.
Findings From A Large Study
A large study involving more than 500,000 couples in China found that fathers who consumed more than 50 ml of alcohol daily during the three months before conception were more likely to have children with certain congenital abnormalities, including cleft lip, heart defects and intestinal disorders.
The researchers reported that the risk appeared to increase with higher levels of alcohol consumption.
Evidence From Animal Research
Research led by Michael Golding of Texas A&M University examined the effects of alcohol exposure in male mice before conception.
The study found that offspring of alcohol-exposed male mice showed changes in facial development, including smaller eyes and altered jaw structure. While animal studies cannot be directly applied to humans, researchers say they provide insight into the potential biological effects of paternal alcohol consumption.
Health Experts Recommend Lifestyle Changes
Medical experts advise couples planning a pregnancy to adopt healthy lifestyles before conception.
They recommend that men avoid alcohol in the months leading up to conception, alongside maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly and managing chronic health conditions. These measures, researchers say, may contribute to healthier pregnancies and improved outcomes for children.
Experts also emphasise that responsibility for a healthy pregnancy is shared by both parents and that preconception health should include attention to the wellbeing and lifestyle of fathers as well as mothers.
