Patna: Google is reportedly working on a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature for Google Maps that could allow users to search for restaurants, choose dishes and prepare food orders without switching to separate food delivery apps. The feature, reportedly named “Ask Maps to Order Food”, has been spotted in the backend code of the Google Maps Android app, according to media reports.
The feature has not been officially announced by Google, and there is no confirmed timeline for its launch or wider availability.
AI Could Simplify Food Ordering
Reports suggest the feature could help users find nearby restaurants, recommend dishes based on their preferences and assist with preparing an order directly within Google Maps.
The development aligns with Google’s broader focus on “agentic AI”, where AI systems perform tasks on behalf of users instead of only providing information.
How The Feature May Work
Google has not disclosed how the feature will function. However, reports indicate users may be able to describe what they want to eat, after which the AI could recommend suitable restaurants and menu items using information such as saved places and personal preferences.
It also remains unclear whether the feature will rely on Google’s cloud-based AI models, including Gemini, or use on-device AI capabilities.
Users Will Make The Final Decision
While AI could assist with restaurant discovery and order preparation, reports suggest users will retain control over the final purchase.
Before placing an order or authorising payment, users would be able to review restaurant details, selected dishes, quantities and pricing. This could help reduce errors such as incorrect items or unexpected costs.
Privacy Questions Remain
The proposed feature may also raise questions about data privacy. To provide personalised recommendations, the AI may need access to information such as user preferences and previous activity.
Google has not yet explained what data would be used, how it would be processed or whether restaurant recommendations would include sponsored listings alongside personalised suggestions.
Still Under Development
The feature is reportedly in the early stages of development, based on references found in version 26.27.00 of the Google Maps Android app. Until Google makes an official announcement, its functionality, availability and launch schedule remain uncertain.
If introduced, the feature could expand Google Maps from a navigation platform into a broader AI-powered assistant for everyday tasks.
