Patna’s ‘Waste-to-Wonder’ Park Set to Bring Bihar’s Monuments Together in One Space

Patna: Patna’s upcoming ‘Waste-to-Wonder’ theme park is expected to open in August after construction reaches its final stages, according to officials overseeing the project. Around 90% of the work has been completed, with lighting, landscaping and the installation of artwork scheduled before the park is opened to the public.

The park, officially named Dr. Rajendra Prasad Bihar Gaurav Park, is being developed by the Bihar Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (BUDCO) on a nine-acre site between JP Ganga Path (Marine Drive) and the memorial of India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad.

What Work Remains Before the Park Opens?

According to officials associated with the project, the next phase will focus on installing specialised lighting and completing landscaping across the park.

Each monument and art installation will receive lighting designed to complement its architectural style rather than using a uniform illumination system. Officials said warm lighting fixtures are being sourced from Delhi, while the overall lighting design is based on a model used in Prayagraj.

Among the park’s centrepieces is a replica of the Mahabodhi Temple. Officials said all 11 levels of the structure will feature dedicated lighting to enhance its appearance after sunset.

Street lighting and high-mast lights will also be installed throughout the premises to improve visibility and visitor safety.

Three Separate Zones Planned for Visitors

The park has been designed with three distinct visitor zones catering to different age groups.

According to officials, there will be separate recreational spaces for children and adults, along with a dedicated area intended for young visitors.

Landscaping is also expected to begin shortly. Officials said the gardens will feature several plant varieties that have not previously been introduced in Patna’s public parks.

Scrap-Made Art Installations Await Civil Work

Most of the sculptures and art installations have already been completed but are yet to be installed because sections of the civil construction remain unfinished.

Officials said the artworks will be placed across the park once the remaining construction work is completed.

The park will feature 38 different art installations, including replicas of Bihar’s historic monuments, sculptures, murals and animal figures associated with the state’s cultural and natural heritage.

A Rs 15 Crore Project Built from Scrap Materials

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone for the project, which is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore.

The park is intended to showcase Bihar’s civilisation, history and cultural identity through artworks created almost entirely from discarded materials.

According to BUDCO, materials such as used tyres, broken pipes, discarded bangles, e-waste, bottles and metal scrap are being repurposed to create the installations.

Artists from Gujarat and Odisha Contributing to the Project

Artists from Gujarat have been engaged to produce the scrap-based installations, while artisans from Odisha are crafting many of the sculptures.

The surroundings, including the proposed food court, will also showcase traditional Bihar art forms such as Madhubani, Manjusha, Tikuli and Sujani painting.

Environmental Awareness at the Centre of the Project

According to officials, the project aims to encourage the reuse of discarded materials while promoting environmental awareness through public art.

The park has been conceived as part of broader efforts to support cleanliness initiatives by demonstrating how waste materials can be transformed into artistic and educational installations. If construction, landscaping and lighting are completed as scheduled, the park is expected to welcome visitors in August.
