Patna: The Centre has initiated the process for a proposed national highway connecting Supaul and Darbhanga by directing the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR), a key preliminary step before construction can begin.
The proposed highway is expected to strengthen road connectivity across Mithilanchal and North Bihar, benefiting several districts, including Supaul, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur.
DPR Preparation Begins
According to official information, the Union government has asked the NHAI to begin preparing the DPR, which will determine the highway’s alignment, technical specifications, estimated cost and implementation plan.
The proposed route is expected to connect Beria in Supaul district with Darbhanga. However, the project remains in its initial planning stage.
Proposal Raised With Centre
The proposal was reportedly placed before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari by Bihar deputy chief minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, following which the Centre initiated the DPR process.
Expected Benefits For North Bihar
Once completed, the highway is expected to reduce travel time between major towns in North Bihar and improve connectivity for neighbouring districts, including Madhubani, Sitamarhi and Muzaffarpur.
The project is also expected to facilitate freight movement, reduce transport costs and improve access to markets for agricultural produce. Officials believe the improved road network could support trade, attract investment and create employment opportunities in the region.
Project Still In Initial Stage
The proposal was among several national highway projects discussed during a meeting between Bihar chief minister Samrat Choudhary and Union minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on June 29 this year.
Before construction can begin, the project must complete the DPR, followed by land acquisition, environmental clearances and budgetary approvals. No timeline for the start of construction has been announced.
