New Delhi/Patna: Gold prices edged higher on Thursday, with the price of 24-carat gold rising by Rs 177 per 10 grams to Rs 1.42 lakh, according to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA). Silver, meanwhile, continued its downward trend, falling by Rs 789 to Rs 2.17 lakh per kilogram.
The precious metals market has seen sharp fluctuations throughout 2026, with prices retreating from record highs reached earlier in the year.
Gold Up Rs 9,000 This Year
Gold has appreciated by around Rs 9,000 since the beginning of the year. On December 31, 2025, 10 grams of 24-carat gold was priced at just over Rs 1.33 lakh. It has since climbed to Rs 1.42 lakh despite periods of volatility.
Silver has moved in the opposite direction, declining by about Rs 13,000 over the same period. It has fallen from Rs 2.30 lakh per kilogram at the end of last year to Rs 2.17 lakh.
Earlier this year, gold touched an all-time high of Rs 1.76 lakh per 10 grams, while silver reached Rs 3.86 lakh per kilogram on January 29.
Analysts Advise Staggered Investment
Commodity market analysts say both gold and silver have corrected significantly from their peak levels, creating opportunities for investors.
They caution, however, against making a lump-sum investment and instead recommend investing in phases to reduce the impact of price volatility.
Some market experts expect gold to recover to around Rs 1.60 lakh per 10 grams and silver to Rs 2.80 lakh per kilogram by the end of the year, although such projections remain subject to market conditions.
ETFs Offer An Alternative To Physical Bullion
Investors looking for exposure to precious metals can also invest through Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), which track the market prices of gold and silver.
Gold ETFs and Silver ETFs are traded on the BSE and NSE in the same way as shares. Instead of receiving physical bullion, investors buy units linked to the metal’s market price and receive the prevailing value when they sell.
Investment in these ETFs can begin with amounts as low as Rs 500.
