Patna: The flood threat in Bihar remains a concern as heavy flooding in Nepal continues to affect rivers flowing into the state. Large quantities of soil, stones and other debris are being carried downstream, prompting authorities to intensify surveillance in border areas and along riverbanks.
Officials are monitoring river water levels, flow rates and embankment conditions, with particular attention on rivers such as the Gandak and Kosi.
Sudden flash floods in Nepal’s hilly regions have caused extensive damage and altered river flows as mountain debris enters waterways. Any further rainfall or sudden change in water discharge could affect downstream areas of Bihar.
Gandak, Kosi And Other Rivers Under Watch
The water level of the Gandak is being closely monitored following heavy rainfall and flooding in Nepal. Fluctuations have been recorded near the Valmikinagar Barrage.
Although water levels have fallen at some locations, authorities remain cautious as conditions in Nepal’s hilly areas have not fully stabilised.
The Kosi, Budhi Gandak and Ganga are also under close observation. Water levels in some locations have remained close to or crossed the danger mark, prompting authorities to advise people living near riverbanks to exercise caution.
Embankment Surveillance Intensified
The Water Resources Department has increased monitoring of vulnerable embankment locations across the state. Officials and field teams have been directed to remain alert for signs of erosion, seepage or increased pressure.
Authorities are also preparing for situations in which river levels could rise rapidly. Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to avoid riverbanks and rely only on official information.
Six Districts Under Special Vigilance
Special attention is being maintained in West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur and Vaishali, which could be affected by increased water flow from Nepal.
Authorities in vulnerable areas have been asked to keep evacuation arrangements ready. Plans are also in place to shift residents from low-lying areas to safer locations if the situation worsens.
NDRF and SDRF teams remain on standby to respond to emergencies.
