Patna, September 25: The Danapur-Bihta elevated road project has gained momentum after key clearances, with the first major section targeted for opening by March 2027.
The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Patna and Bihta, a town on the western outskirts of Patna in Patna district. According to the project update, the journey between Patna and Bihta could take around 20 to 30 minutes once the elevated corridor is fully operational.
The projected travel time will depend on traffic conditions, entry and exit points and the final operating arrangement.
Danapur-Visunpur Section Targeted For March
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has set a target of March 2027 for opening the elevated section between Danapur and Visunpur.
Around 65% of the work on this section has been completed, according to the project details.
Construction of two pillars near the railway premises west of Danapur station had earlier been delayed because of a railway office occupying the required land. The Railways has now vacated the office and handed over the land to NHAI, allowing the pending work to move forward.
25-Km Project To Have 17 Km Elevated Road
The entire Danapur-Bihta project is around 25 km long, of which approximately 17 km will be elevated.
NHAI has set August 2027 as the target for completing the full project.
The corridor is being developed to improve traffic movement between Danapur, Bihta and surrounding areas, while also providing better access towards Bihta’s growing infrastructure and transport facilities.
Bihta Airport Connectivity To Improve
The second phase will cover the section from Visunpur to ESIC, Bihta.
A toll plaza is planned at Visunpur, while a dedicated subway is proposed to provide access towards Bihta Airport. Airport-bound vehicles will be able to use the separate route, helping them avoid some of the main corridor traffic.
The arrangement is expected to improve road access to the airport once the relevant sections of the project become operational.
15 Km Of Service Roads Completed
Around 15 km of service roads running on both sides below the elevated corridor have been completed, according to the project update.
Construction is being carried out alongside traffic-management measures. Heavy vehicles have been diverted from sections of the route where construction work is underway.
NHAI is also carrying out some girder and span installation work at night using cranes to minimise disruption to daytime traffic.
Patna-Bihta Journey Could Drop To 20-30 Minutes
The Patna-Bihta journey can currently take around 90 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
Once the elevated road is fully completed, the project is expected to bring the travel time down to around 20-30 minutes.
The figure is a projected journey time rather than a guaranteed travel duration and will depend on the final road layout, traffic flow and access points.
Danapur-Buxar Connectivity Also In Focus
The project is also expected to improve connectivity towards western Bihar.
According to the project update, the target is to enable travel between Danapur and Buxar, around 125 km apart, in approximately two hours.
Further connectivity from Buxar, including links towards the Purvanchal Expressway, could provide an additional road route towards destinations such as Ayodhya and Delhi.
The Danapur-Bihta elevated road is therefore being developed as part of the wider road network around Patna, with the project aimed at improving connectivity towards Bihta and reducing congestion on existing routes.
