Patna:The Delhi government is preparing to introduce an interstate bus service between Delhi and Bihar ahead of Diwali and Chhath Puja, with 18 routes identified and four proposed for Patna.
The proposed service is aimed at meeting increased travel demand during the festive season, when a large number of people living in Delhi travel to Bihar. With train tickets often difficult to secure during this period, the proposed bus service could provide an additional travel option.
18 Routes Identified Between Delhi And Bihar
According to the proposal, 18 routes connecting Delhi with different cities in Bihar have been identified. However, a final decision on operating buses on all 18 routes has not yet been taken.
The proposed destinations include Patna, Bihar Sharif, Araria, Bhagalpur, Buxar, Darbhanga, East Champaran, Gaya, Kishanganj, Madhubani, Muzaffarpur and Nawada.
Among these, four routes have been proposed for Delhi-Patna connectivity. The estimated distance on these routes is between 1,045 and 1,182 kilometres, depending on the route.
2–3 Routes May Start Initially
The Delhi government is considering starting the service on two to three selected routes in the first phase. Additional routes could be introduced later depending on passenger demand.
The final routes, therefore, have not yet been confirmed. The selection will depend on the recommendations of a committee and the proposed agreement between Delhi and Bihar.
Committee To Finalise Bus Routes And Fares
The Delhi Transport Department has formed a committee to prepare a final report on suggestions received regarding the proposed reciprocal transport agreement between the two states.
A senior Transport Department official said details such as routes, fares and other operating conditions would be made public after the committee submits its report.
A draft of the proposed agreement was prepared by Delhi and Bihar in August 2026. The agreement would allow stage-carriage buses to operate on designated interstate routes.
CNG And Electric Buses Included In Proposal
The proposed transport agreement also contains provisions related to vehicle emission standards.
CNG and electric buses would be permitted under the proposed arrangement. Diesel buses operating on interstate routes would have to comply with BS-VI or newer emission standards.
No Government Bus Service Between Delhi And Bihar Currently
At present, there is no government-operated bus service between Delhi and Bihar, although private bus operators run services between several destinations in the two states.
Under the proposed arrangement, private bus operators may also be permitted to operate interstate services subject to the prescribed rules and conditions.
Service Targeted Before Diwali And Chhath
The Delhi government is aiming to begin operations on at least two to three routes before Diwali and Chhath Puja.
However, the final routes, fares, number of buses and commencement date are yet to be decided. These details will be determined after the committee submits its report and the reciprocal transport agreement between Delhi and Bihar is finalised.
