Patna: The Department of Mass Communication, Patna Women’s College, organised a guest lecture on “Emerging Career Opportunities in the Changing Media Landscape” at the Mother Veronica Excellence and Innovation Centre on Wednesday.
Writer and journalist Jayanti Ranganathan was the guest speaker at the session, where she shared her professional experiences and discussed the changing nature of journalism and opportunities emerging in the media industry.
The session was moderated by Ayesha Shamama Jalil and Aditi Komal, students of Semester V. Assistant Professor Gaurav Aranya welcomed Ranganathan, while Roma, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, presented her with a plant sapling as a gesture of welcome.
Women’s Experiences In Journalism
During the lecture, Ranganathan spoke about her experiences as a woman journalist and discussed the challenges and differences women may encounter while working in the media profession.
She shared two personal experiences with students, giving them an insight into the practical realities of working in journalism.
The discussion also addressed the perception that employment opportunities in journalism are declining. Ranganathan explained that the growth of digital media and social media has created new areas of work within the industry.
Citizen Journalism And New Media
Ranganathan discussed the growing role of citizen journalism, highlighting both its advantages and challenges.
She encouraged students to understand the changing media environment and explore the opportunities emerging across different areas of journalism and media.
The interactive session gave students an opportunity to engage with the speaker and gain a practical understanding of the profession and its changing career landscape.
Discussion On ‘Sugar Daddy’
Towards the end of the programme, Ranganathan spoke about her book “Sugar Daddy”, giving students an insight into her work as a writer.
The session concluded with Assistant Professor Ajay Jha felicitating Ranganathan by presenting her with a Madhubani painting as a token of appreciation.
Assistant Professor Gaurav Aranya delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the guest speaker, faculty members and students for their participation and contribution to the successful organisation of the event.
