Patna : AIIMS Patna has received approval from the Union Health Ministry to establish a dedicated brain stroke treatment centre aimed at providing specialised and timely care to patients suffering from strokes and paralysis.
The proposed facility is expected to benefit patients from Bihar and neighbouring states by bringing diagnosis, emergency treatment, intensive care and rehabilitation services together under one roof.
AIIMS Patna Director Brigadier Dr Raju Agrawal said timely treatment is crucial in stroke cases, as prompt medical intervention can help save lives and reduce the risk of long-term disability.
Specialist team for emergency treatment
The proposed stroke centre will have a multidisciplinary team of specialists to manage patients and coordinate treatment according to the severity and nature of their condition.
Doctors will conduct rapid investigations to identify blockages or bleeding in the blood vessels of the brain. Based on the diagnosis, patients requiring urgent procedures will receive appropriate medical or surgical intervention.
The facility is also expected to provide intensive care and life-support support for patients experiencing severe strokes. Such patients will be kept under close medical supervision to monitor their condition and manage complications.
Focus on rehabilitation and recovery
Apart from emergency treatment, the centre will focus on helping patients recover from the physical effects of a stroke.
A specialised team of physiotherapists will work with patients to improve mobility and restore physical functions affected by paralysis. The rehabilitation process will depend on the nature of the stroke, the extent of neurological damage and the patient’s recovery needs.
By integrating specialist treatment with rehabilitation, the proposed facility aims to provide a more coordinated approach to stroke care.
Timely treatment remains critical
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or when a blood vessel in the brain bleeds. Both conditions require urgent medical assessment, and treatment depends on the type of stroke and how quickly the patient receives care.
The planned centre is expected to strengthen access to specialised stroke services at AIIMS Patna, particularly for patients who need emergency intervention and follow-up rehabilitation.
The ministry’s approval marks a step towards establishing the facility. Details regarding its bed capacity, construction timeline and expected opening date have not been specified in the information provided.
