Darbhanga: A high-level technical team from India’s Union health ministry is expected to visit the construction site of AIIMS Darbhanga to assess progress and recommend measures to accelerate the project. The inspection comes as authorities face mounting pressure to keep the ambitious healthcare institute on schedule.
The development follows a meeting between Darbhanga MP Gopal Ji Thakur and Union health minister J. P. Nadda in New Delhi, where the lawmaker submitted a memorandum urging that the project be implemented in a time-bound manner. Officials said the minister responded positively and assured that steps would be taken to expedite construction activities.
Concerns have been raised about the feasibility of completing the institute by 2027, a timeline referenced during the foundation ceremony led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Observers point to the current pace of work as a potential challenge, a topic that has also sparked discussion across social media platforms.
Work is currently underway on a Rs 37.82-crore boundary wall project stretching 5.3 kilometres, which began in May 2025 and is scheduled for completion by April 2026. The upcoming technical inspection is expected to focus on reviewing this progress as well as evaluating the broader readiness of the construction site.
AIIMS Darbhanga, announced in the 2015 Union budget and approved by the cabinet in 2020, faced prolonged delays due to land selection issues before the project was formally launched in November 2024. Construction gathered pace in early 2025, with initial efforts centred on basic infrastructure such as the boundary wall and main entrance.
Estimated to cost around Rs 1,264 crore, the institute is planned as a 750-bed tertiary care hospital equipped with emergency, trauma and intensive care facilities, along with AYUSH services. The academic component will include 100 MBBS seats and 60 BSc nursing seats, positioning the institution as a key centre for healthcare delivery and medical education in eastern India.
