Patna: The Department of Biochemistry at AIIMS Patna is conducting a four-day training programme on ISO 15189, the international standard for quality and competence in medical laboratories, from August 11 to August 14.
The programme is aimed at strengthening laboratory professionals’ understanding of quality standards and their practical application in routine diagnostic services. Sessions focus on improving the accuracy, consistency and reliability of laboratory testing.
Quality Management And Risk Assessment
The training covers key components of laboratory quality systems, including documentation and record management, risk assessment, quality assurance, process control and accreditation requirements.
Participants are also being trained on quality indicators, personnel competency and internal quality assurance procedures.
According to AIIMS Patna, the programme seeks to ensure that quality practices become part of routine laboratory functioning rather than being treated only as an accreditation requirement.
Expert Trainers Conduct Sessions
The training is being conducted by experts from Medical Education and Learning Point (MELAP), Delhi, led by Dr Neeraj Jain.
Interactive sessions, practical demonstrations and real-world examples are being used to explain ISO 15189 requirements and their application in medical laboratory settings.
Participants are also being encouraged to identify gaps in existing processes, assess potential risks and adopt measures to improve laboratory efficiency and reliability.
AIIMS Patna Officials Support Programme
The initiative is being conducted under the guidance of Dr Sadhana Sharma, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, AIIMS Patna.
AIIMS Patna Executive Director and CEO Prof. (Brig.) Dr Raju Agarwal has supported the initiative, with an emphasis on strengthening quality systems, professional capacity and patient-centred healthcare.
Prof. Punam Prasad Bhadani, Dean (Academics), and Prof. Dr Prashant Kumar Singh, Medical Superintendent, AIIMS Patna, were also present and extended their support to the programme.
Quality Of Testing Linked To Patient Care
Dr Sadhana Sharma said the quality of laboratory investigations has a direct bearing on clinical decision-making and patient outcomes.
She emphasised that quality needs to be maintained throughout the diagnostic process, from sample collection and handling to testing, reporting and documentation.
Training To Continue Through August 14
The programme will continue through August 14, with further sessions focusing on the practical implementation of ISO 15189 requirements.
AIIMS Patna said the training is intended to strengthen the technical and managerial capabilities of laboratory personnel and support the adoption of internationally benchmarked quality practices in diagnostic services.
