Patna: AIIMS Patna has been awarded a place in the Limca Book of Records for performing what is described as the largest skull bone tumour removal surgery recorded in India, marking a significant milestone for the institute’s neurosurgery department.
Record-Breaking Surgical Procedure
The recognition has been granted to Dr. Saraj Kumar Singh, Additional Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at AIIMS Patna, along with his medical team.
According to details shared by the institute, the team successfully removed a skull bone tumour measuring 22 cm × 16 cm × 7 cm and weighing approximately 830 grams from a 29-year-old male patient.
Complex Operation Conducted Over Several Hours
As per the official citation from the Limca Book of Records, the surgery was performed on February 21, 2024, at AIIMS Patna.
The procedure involved a carefully planned craniotomy and tumour resection. It began at 9:00 a.m. and concluded at 4:45 p.m., lasting a total of 7 hours and 45 minutes.
Hospital authorities described the case as highly complex due to the size, weight and location of the tumour, requiring advanced surgical planning and multidisciplinary coordination.
Institutional Recognition and Response
Executive Director of AIIMS Patna, Prof. (Brig.) Dr. Raju Agarwal, congratulated Dr. Singh and the entire team, stating that the achievement is a matter of pride for the institute and for Bihar.
He said the recognition reflects the growing capacity of AIIMS Patna in handling rare and high-risk neurosurgical cases using advanced medical technology and specialised expertise.
Growing Medical Capability
Officials at the institute said the recognition further strengthens AIIMS Patna’s position as a leading centre for advanced healthcare in eastern India.
The achievement is also being seen as a reflection of expanding surgical capabilities and ongoing efforts to improve specialised treatment facilities for patients across Bihar and neighbouring states.
