Patna: The Department of Burns & Plastic Surgery at AIIMS (All India institute of Medical Sciences) Patna concluded a two-day National Workshop and Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on “Recent Updates in Hand Surgery” on Saturday, organised under the aegis of the Indian Society for Surgery of Hand (ISSH).
The workshop, held on Friday anmd Saturday to mark National Hand Surgery Day, brought together faculty members and trainees from major medical centres across India.
The programme was conducted under the theme “From Stability to Function: Evolving Concepts in Hand Surgery”, with a focus on strengthening practical and scientific training and highlighting the importance of timely specialist care, reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Focus on surgical techniques
The workshop was inaugurated by Prof (Brig) Dr Raju Agarwal, executive director and CEO of AIIMS Patna. He also spoke about the institute’s proposed hand transplant programme.
The first day featured hands-on training in fracture fixation and operative techniques. The second day included expert sessions on tendon and nerve injuries, brachial plexus surgery, microsurgical reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Hand transplantation and vascularised composite allotransplantation were also discussed as emerging areas in reconstructive surgery.
Faculty and organisers
The programme was led by Prof (Dr) Veena Kumari Singh, professor and head of the Department of Burns & Plastic Surgery and organising chairperson.
Dr Ansarul Haq, Dr Sarsij Sharma, Dr Vishwadeep Kumar and Dr Kuldeep Singh supported the organisation of the programme.
The CME concluded with a valedictory session and distribution of certificates. Organisers said such programmes can contribute to improving surgical skills, functional outcomes and awareness of modern approaches to hand care.
