Patna: On the occasion of Physician’s Day 2025, the Department of Emergency Medicine at AIIMS Patna organised a CPR awareness programme to educate people about basic life-saving techniques. The aim of the programme was to make ordinary citizens aware of how quick action during a medical emergency, especially a cardiac arrest, can save lives. Doctors explained that many deaths occur not because help is unavailable, but because people around the patient do not know what to do in the first few crucial minutes.
The programme was held at Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib, one of the most respected Sikh gurudwaras in the city. Choosing a public and religious place helped ensure greater participation and trust from the community. A team from AIIMS Patna, including Dr Divendu Bhushan, head of emergency medicine, Dr Deepak Kumar, assistant professor, and Dr Vinay Kumar Singh, senior resident, along with senior nursing staff Sitaram and Inderjeet Singh Yadav, conducted the session and interacted directly with visitors.
During the awareness session, the medical team demonstrated hands-only CPR in a simple and easy-to-understand manner. Participants were taught how to identify the signs of sudden cardiac arrest, how to call for emergency help, and how to begin chest compressions immediately. Visitors and gurudwara staff actively took part and practised CPR under medical supervision. The programme was conducted in the presence of Prof. (Brig.) Dr Raju Agrawal, executive director of AIIMS Patna, and Dr Anup Kumar, medical superintendent, who encouraged people to remain calm and confident during emergencies.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Divendu Bhushan said CPR awareness is not limited to doctors or hospitals but is a responsibility of society as a whole. He explained that timely CPR can significantly increase a person’s chances of survival and that anyone, with basic training, can make a difference. He added that such programmes help remove fear and hesitation among the public when faced with emergency situations.
AIIMS Patna thanked Sardar Jagjot Singh Sohi Ji, president of Takhat Sri Harimandir Ji Patna Sahib, for supporting the initiative and allowing the programme to be conducted at the gurudwara. The institute said it remains committed to spreading emergency care awareness through regular community programmes, with the goal of creating a safer and more prepared society where more lives can be saved through timely action.
