Gaya: A retired Air Force warrant officer, Mohanlal, made headlines in Gaya district by staging his own symbolic funeral while alive. The 74-year-old officer, who served 21 years in the Indian Air Force, took this extraordinary step to raise awareness about the lack of proper cremation facilities in his village and to leave a lasting legacy of social service.
The event took place in Konchi village, Guraru block, where Mohanlal, dressed in a white shroud, lay on a bamboo bier and was carried to a newly constructed cremation ground, accompanied by traditional music and chants of “Ram Naam Satya Hai.” The striking display drew hundreds of villagers, friends, and family, all witnessing a unique ceremony that blended symbolism with community service.
Mohanlal funded the construction of the cremation ground himself, spending over six lakh rupees to ensure a proper, permanent facility for local residents. During monsoon months, villagers had faced significant challenges in conducting cremations, struggling with waterlogged grounds and muddy terrain. “No one should be denied a dignified final journey,” Mohanlal said, explaining the motivation behind the project.
“This was not just about my funeral,” he added. “I wanted to see who would stand with me for the community and also provide a facility that ensures every villager can be cremated respectfully.” Mohanlal’s initiative also included a symbolic effigy cremation and a community feast to involve the villagers.
Beyond this extraordinary act, Mohanlal has dedicated his post-retirement life to education and social upliftment, mentoring hundreds of students from his village to join defence services and other jobs. He studied at Sarvodaya Vidya Mandir, Guraru, before continuing education in Gaya and joining the Air Force, and he now inspires future generations through his philanthropic work.
Locals expressed admiration for Mohanlal’s selfless act. Shravan Kumar, a resident of Konchi, said, “I have never seen such a remarkable person. He has combined his life story, service to the nation, and community welfare in an unforgettable way. His efforts will inspire generations.”
