Patna: Political activity has intensified in Bihar ahead of a high-profile visit by India’s home minister and mounting speculation over the chief minister’s future.
Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Patna at 10am on Thursday, in a visit widely seen as politically significant as rumours swirl that the chief minister, Nitish Kumar, may file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on the same day.
Although there has been no official confirmation from the ruling alliance, discussions in political circles have gathered pace in recent days. If Nitish were to move to the upper house of parliament, analysts say it could trigger a substantial realignment in the state’s power structure.
Shah’s visit comes as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is expected to finalise its strategy for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Senior leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ally, the Janata Dal (United), are likely to hold discussions on seat-sharing and leadership arrangements.
According to party sources, Shah is expected to meet senior BJP leaders and representatives of allied parties soon after his arrival. The meetings are likely to focus on consolidating support for NDA candidates and coordinating the nomination process. Reports suggest that BJP leader Nitin Nabin may also file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha during the visit.
The possibility of CM entering the Rajya Sabha has fuelled speculation about succession in Bihar. Some political observers argue that such a move could open the door to a greater leadership role for the BJP in the state, while also prompting internal debate within the JD(U) over its future direction.
Opposition parties, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Indian National Congress, have been closely monitoring developments. Leaders from both parties have suggested that any such shift would form part of a broader electoral strategy ahead of upcoming contests.
For now, attention remains fixed on whether Nitish will formally announce his candidacy and what that decision might mean for Bihar’s political landscape.
