Patna: The Patna High Court has granted bail to former Mokama MLA Anant Singh in connection with the Pachmahal firing case, paving the way for his release ahead of the upcoming Bihar assembly elections.
Singh, popularly known as ‘Chhote Sarkar’, has been in judicial custody following a violent clash earlier this year in which multiple rounds were reportedly fired. The incident dates back to January 22, when a dispute erupted between Mukesh Singh, a clerk at a brick kiln, and two individuals identified as Sonu and Monu. The pair had allegedly accused Mukesh of embezzling Rs 68 lakh and locked his house.
Following a complaint lodged by Mukesh, Anant Singh and his supporters reportedly broke the lock and attempted to mediate. A confrontation in Nauranga village between the two groups soon escalated, resulting in an exchange of fire. While witnesses claimed over 70 rounds were fired, police recovered only 14 bullet casings at the scene. The following day, further firing was reported at Mukesh Singh’s house, with four more shells recovered.
Police arrested Sonu on 24 January, and on the same day, Anant Singh surrendered in Barh court. A 53-second video of the incident, which later went viral on social media, formed a key piece of evidence in the case. Singh was charged under various sections including the Arms Act, attempt to murder, and obstruction of public servants.
After months in jail, Singh’s legal team approached the Patna High Court for bail. The court granted his request, offering significant relief to the former legislator. With this decision, Singh is expected to walk free in the coming days.
