Patna: Dr Anjani Sinha, an Indian-origin orthopaedic surgeon born in Bihar, has been appointed the United States ambassador to Singapore, marking a significant diplomatic assignment for a medical professional who built a distinguished career across America’s top healthcare institutions.
Sinha, appointed by US President Donald Trump, arrived in Singapore on Thursday (6 November) to assume office. The US Embassy described his selection as a reaffirmation of Washington’s commitment to strengthening a partnership that has shaped regional security and technological cooperation for nearly six decades.
A career spanning medicine, business and public service
Raised in Bihar, Sinha graduated from Mahatma Gandhi Medical College before moving to New Delhi in 1972 for further training at Safdarjung Hospital, affiliated with Delhi University and the Central Institute of Orthopaedics. He migrated to the United States in 1979, where he built a formidable reputation in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine.
Sinha completed internships at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and later worked as a senior orthopaedic consultant across eight major facilities on the US East Coast. He also served as a senior surgical consultant in Florida. His work spanned public and private healthcare, business ventures, and advisory roles that connected him with professionals across medical, legal and corporate sectors.
He is married to Dr Kuntala “Kiki” Sinha, a retired anaesthesiologist and former NYU faculty member.
Strengthening US–Singapore ties
The US Embassy said Sinha’s appointment reflects Washington’s intent to deepen collaboration with Singapore in areas including emerging technology, energy security, law enforcement and defence cooperation. His leadership, the statement added, comes at a time when the Indo-Pacific region is central to US strategic priorities.
As ambassador, Sinha will be responsible for advancing bilateral cooperation, expanding economic engagement, and supporting shared security objectives. His arrival, the embassy noted, signals “a continued commitment to prosperity, stability and innovation” in a region marked by rapid geopolitical change.
