Darbhanga: Bihar has achieved a new milestone in the field of cricket. Arvind Achal, who hails from Makaranda village in Manigachi block of Darbhanga district, has become the first cricket umpire from the state to enter the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) development umpire panel. With this, he will now be seen officiating in ICC tournaments and international matches. His achievement has brought pride not only to his family but also to the entire Mithila region and Bihar.
Arvind’s journey towards this honour was not easy. He did not start as a player or coach but chose the tough and often overlooked path of umpiring. For 25 years, he worked tirelessly, umpiring in small matches and gradually learning the rules and responsibilities of the game. Through years of consistent effort and dedication, he improved his skills and finally earned his place on the ICC panel. Recently, he marked his international debut as an umpire in the T20 matches played between Switzerland and Estonia in Tallinn, Estonia’s capital city.
His success has created a wave of celebration in his village and across Mithila. Arvind’s father, Tuntun Jha, expressed great pride in his son’s achievement, calling it a dream come true for the family. Villagers, friends and colleagues said that his accomplishment is a source of inspiration for young people who want to make a career in cricket in different roles beyond playing.
Experts have also highlighted the importance of this achievement. Until now, no umpire from Bihar had reached the international level, making Arvind’s success a historic first. His story shows that passion and persistence can open new opportunities. It also sends a strong message to Bihar’s youth that there are many ways to shine in the world of sports—not only as players but also as umpires, coaches and organisers. Arvind’s journey proves that with determination and hard work, even the biggest dreams can be turned into reality.
