Aurangabad/Patna: A major infrastructure project has been proposed to tackle rising traffic congestion and road safety concerns in Aurangabad, with plans for a 36km-long four-lane greenfield bypass along National Highway 139.
Officials said the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project has been prepared, and further steps will be taken once formal approval is granted.
Route And Connectivity
The proposed bypass will begin at Khairi village in the Aurangabad Sadar block and run through the Raipura area, bypassing the western edges of Risiap and Amba market zones.
It will eventually connect to the upcoming Varanasi–Kolkata Greenfield Expressway, significantly enhancing regional connectivity.
Authorities said the new route will allow vehicles travelling between Aurangabad and Daltonganj—or towards Patna and the GT Road—to avoid entering the city, thereby reducing traffic pressure on urban roads.
Unified Project Plan
Initially, separate bypasses were planned for Aurangabad and Amba. However, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) later consolidated them into a single project due to the proximity of the two areas.
A consultancy agency subsequently prepared a unified DPR covering the entire 36km stretch.
Integration With Bharatmala Project
A key feature of the bypass is its integration with the Bharatmala Pariyojana, under which the route will pass beneath an under-construction expressway.
Land acquisition will be carried out to facilitate the project.
Additional Infrastructure Plans
Alongside the bypass, authorities have proposed widening NH-139 between Erka Colony and Dhanibar and Pola.
Separate proposals are also under consideration for a dedicated bypass around Obra market and an underpass on the Amba–Nabinagar road.
Expected Impact
Officials said the project is expected to ease chronic traffic congestion in Aurangabad, Amba, Risiap and Obra, while improving road safety and reducing travel time.
If approved and executed on schedule, the bypass is likely to play a key role in strengthening connectivity and supporting economic activity in the region.
