Patna: Two people have died and three others are in a critical condition after an ambulance collided with an unidentified vehicle on the Bakhtiyarpur–Mokama four-lane highway in Bihar’s Patna district early on Monday.
The crash took place near the Jagannath petrol pump in the Athmagola police station area, close to Sabnima village. According to police, the impact was so severe that the ambulance was completely destroyed.
Officers said the occupants of the ambulance were travelling from Patna to Purnia when the collision occurred. Two people died at the scene.
The deceased have been identified as Anjum Khatoon, wife of Badruddin Shah, a resident of Parasmani under Sarson police station in Purnia district, and Raj Kishore Singh, father of Buddhiman Singh, a resident of Karaili Bari under Dighalbank police station in Kishanganj district. Their families have been informed. The bodies have been sent for postmortem examination.
Three other passengers sustained serious injuries. With the help of local residents and police, they were taken to Barh Sadar hospital for initial treatment and later referred to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) due to the severity of their condition. Doctors said they remain critical.
The collision caused traffic disruption and panic in the area. Police from Athmagola station reached the scene shortly after being alerted and began rescue operations.
Investigators have seized the damaged ambulance and are examining CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify the other vehicle involved, which fled the scene. Police said an investigation is under way and that speeding and negligence on the four-lane highway are being considered as possible factors in the crash.
