Patna: Archaeologists have unearthed a range of ancient structural remains and artefacts at the Balirajgarh excavation site in Bihar’s Madhubani district, with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) planning to continue scientific excavations at the site for the next 10 years.
The update was shared by JD(U) Working National President and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, who said the discoveries highlight the archaeological significance of the historic site.
Ancient Structures Unearthed
According to information shared by Jha, the ongoing excavation is focused on two areas—the ancient fort wall and the land immediately to its south.
Archaeologists have uncovered brick walls, a seven-layered brick structure, courtyards, flooring, ring wells and soak pits equipped with drainage systems, providing fresh insights into the settlement’s historical urban planning and infrastructure.
The excavation has also yielded a variety of artefacts, including pottery of different forms, coins, seals, terracotta figurines, toys and stone balls, which researchers believe reflect multiple cultural phases and the lifestyle of the region’s ancient inhabitants.
Long-Term Excavation Plan
Jha said he spoke with the Secretary of the Union Ministry of Culture on Saturday to review the progress of the excavation.
According to him, the ministry plans to continue excavations at Balirajgarh over the next decade. It also intends to establish a permanent ASI office at the site and develop a museum to preserve and showcase the archaeological discoveries.

Earlier Meeting With Union Minister
Jha, who also chairs the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture, said he had previously met Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on May 19 to discuss the scientific excavation and long-term conservation of Balirajgarh.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Union Ministry of Culture, the Archaeological Survey of India and the Madhubani district administration in advancing the excavation work, which is currently being carried out across six trenches.
