Patna: The 45th three-day annual conference of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) began on October 23, 2026, with live demonstrations of laparoscopic, endoscopic and robotic surgical procedures at the Urja Auditorium under the aegis of the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna.

The first day of BASICON 2026 featured approximately 15 types of surgical procedures covering conditions affecting the gallbladder, abdomen, digestive tract and other organs. The demonstrations aimed to familiarise surgeons with advanced surgical techniques and their practical applications.

Dr Manish Mandal, the organising secretary of the conference, said the workshop included demonstrations of minimally invasive and robotic procedures, alongside discussions on surgical techniques and challenges.

Surgeons Demonstrate Advanced Surgical Techniques

Dr Lakshit Tomar from New Delhi performed a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, explaining the different stages of the procedure to fellow surgeons. He also discussed potential complications and approaches to managing challenges during the operation.

Dr Rajesh Srivastava, a surgeon from Vapi, Gujarat, demonstrated different techniques for abdominal hernia repair, including totally extraperitoneal (TEP), transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP), extended totally extraperitoneal (E-TEP) and hybrid laparoscopic approaches.

Srivastava explained that the choice of technique depends on the nature of the hernia and the patient’s clinical condition.

Dr Sanjay Kumar of IGIMS demonstrated a laparoscopic Heller myotomy with Toupet fundoplication for achalasia cardia, a condition in which patients experience difficulty swallowing because the oesophagus has trouble moving food into the stomach.

The procedure is intended to improve the passage of food into the stomach. Recovery time varies depending on the patient’s condition and post-operative progress.

Rectal Prolapse And Robotic Surgery

Dr Saket Kumar of IGIMS demonstrated a laparoscopic procedure for rectal prolapse, a condition in which the rectum protrudes through the anus.

The workshop also featured robotic procedures for gallbladder, bile duct and hernia conditions performed by Dr P K Jha and Dr Rakesh Kumar Singh of IGIMS.

The surgeons discussed the potential benefits of robotic-assisted surgery, including greater precision in selected procedures and the possibility of reduced blood loss and quicker recovery. Outcomes depend on the procedure and the patient’s condition.

Endoscopy Training For Surgeons

Alongside the surgical demonstrations, Dr Sanjeev Kumar Jha, head of the Department of Gastro-Medicine at IGIMS, conducted a hands-on workshop on endoscopic techniques for gastrointestinal conditions.

The training covered the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the bile duct, oesophagus, large intestine and small intestine. It was designed to help surgeons, particularly postgraduate trainees, develop the skills needed to perform endoscopic procedures safely and effectively.

Surgeons From Bihar Attend Conference

Those present at the event included Dr Alok Abhijit, Dr Manish Mandal, Dr Sanjay Kumar, Dr Saket Kumar, Dr Rakesh Kumar Singh and Dr Amarjit Kumar Raj. ASI president Dr B N Chaudhary and several other surgeons from Bihar also attended.

The three-day conference is bringing surgeons together to observe advanced procedures, exchange clinical knowledge and receive practical training in surgical and endoscopic techniques.
