Bhagalpur: Sachin Kumar, a Ranji Trophy cricketer from Bhagalpur, has been invited by IPL franchise Punjab Kings for a net bowler trial, marking a significant breakthrough for both the player and the district’s cricketing community. The call-up is being seen locally as a landmark moment, with few players from the region having previously reached the doors of an IPL setup.
The right-arm off-spinner has been shortlisted under the franchise’s ‘Future Kings Bowling Edition’ programme, an initiative aimed at identifying and grooming young bowling talent. Officials say his steady rise through domestic cricket, backed by consistent performances, brought him to the attention of selectors.
Sachin’s cricket journey began in district league matches, where his ability to generate sharp turn and maintain a disciplined line and length helped him dominate batters. Coaches recall several matches in which he dismissed experienced players and controlled the pace of the game. His performances at the local level eventually earned him a place in the state squad and later in the Ranji Trophy team.
At the Ranji level, he continued to impress with composure under pressure, delivering key breakthroughs and maintaining tight spells. His patience, accuracy and variation have distinguished him from other young spinners, attributes that are considered essential in longer formats of the game.
Punjab Kings’ net bowler trials are widely regarded as a stepping stone for emerging cricketers, offering exposure to professional training environments and the opportunity to practise alongside top-level players. Even a training stint with an IPL franchise can significantly boost a player’s development and visibility.
The news has generated excitement across Bhagalpur’s cricket circles, with coaches, officials and young players calling it a proud moment for the district. Members of the Bhagalpur District Cricket Association said Sachin’s progress shows that dedication and discipline can help players from smaller centres reach national platforms. With the trial approaching, attention is now fixed on whether his spin bowling can turn this opportunity into a long-term IPL pathway.
