Bhagalpur/Patna: Sultanganj, a town in Bhagalpur district, is set for a significant phase of urban development after the Nagar Parishad (municipal council) approved a series of major infrastructure projects at a meeting held on Tuesday.
Chaired by Rajkumar Guddu, the council cleared 11 proposals aimed at improving civic amenities, boosting tourism and modernizing key public spaces. Officials said the decisions could accelerate development and enhance the town’s appeal to visitors and residents alike.
Among the most prominent proposals is the redevelopment of Krishnanand Stadium into a modern, multifunctional complex. The project, estimated to cost ₹10 crore, will include high-tech upgrades and the construction of a terrace helipad, signalling an effort to position the facility as a regional hub for events and activities.
In a move expected to bolster religious tourism, the council also approved the construction of a glass bridge near the Ajgaibinath temple area ahead of the annual Shravani Mela. The project, with an estimated budget of Rs. 5 crore, is intended to attract pilgrims and visitors while enhancing the overall experience in the temple vicinity.
The meeting also addressed longstanding infrastructure concerns. Plans were approved to replace a dilapidated water tower with a new one, reconstruct the Churi Mandi marketplace, and repair non-functional hand pumps across the town. To improve the implementation of the state’s tap water scheme, the council decided to deploy personnel through an external agency.
Efforts to tackle waterlogging and pipeline leakages will be prioritized, with officials instructed to ensure quicker resolution of such issues.
The council highlighted improved financial performance as well. Against a target of ₹1.51 crore, it reported tax collections exceeding ₹5.76 crore. In a relief measure for residents, the council also reduced the proposed increase in holding tax from 30% to 15%, resolving a matter that had remained pending for over a decade.
Officials said the combination of infrastructure upgrades and administrative reforms could mark a turning point in Sultanganj’s urban development trajectory.
