Patna: The Food and Consumer Protection Department Bihar has announced that commercial LPG cylinders will be made available on an equitable basis for marriage functions, amid efforts to manage supply during the peak wedding season.
Addressing a press conference in Patna on Wednesday, minister Leshi Singh said the government has put in place guidelines to ensure fair distribution among those in need.
“Keeping in mind the marriage season, commercial gas cylinders will be made available to needy persons on an equitable basis,” officials said, explaining that distribution would be proportionate to demand. For instance, if 4,000 cylinders are available for 1,000 weddings in a city, each applicant would receive four cylinders.
Domestic supply stabilises
The minister said domestic LPG supply has improved significantly despite earlier concerns triggered by global energy disruptions linked to tensions in the Gulf region.
“Cylinders are now being delivered within three to four days of booking,” she said, urging consumers not to crowd gas agencies unnecessarily.
Authorities said initial shortages had led to panic buying, but supply has since stabilised following coordination with oil marketing companies.
Action against black marketing
The government has also launched a statewide drive against black marketing and misuse of domestic cylinders. Officials said 114 FIRs have been registered and 1,662 cylinders seized during inspections.
Commercial cylinder supply, which had initially been restricted to prioritise households, is now being restored, with about 60% of demand being met for sectors such as hostels, hospitals, hotels and industry.
Grievance redressal and PNG push
A state-level control room has been set up in Patna to address LPG-related complaints, operating from 7am to 9pm. Officials said daily complaints have declined from around 450 to 150, indicating easing pressure on supply.
The minister also encouraged consumers to shift towards piped natural gas (PNG), describing it as a cheaper and more convenient alternative. Over 99,000 households have already been connected, with expansion underway across all districts under the state’s city gas distribution policy.
Procurement and consumer services
The department also reported progress in agricultural procurement, with Bihar achieving 99.84% of its paddy procurement target for 2025–26, benefiting over 5.5 lakh farmers.
Additionally, video-conferencing facilities are being introduced in consumer dispute redressal forums to enable remote participation in hearings.
Officials said the focus remains on balancing supply, preventing misuse and ensuring equitable access — particularly during periods of high demand such as the wedding season.
