Patna: After days of intense heat, weather conditions across Bihar have turned cooler, with rain, cloud cover and gusty winds bringing relief to several districts.
Since Tuesday morning, parts of the state have witnessed heavy rainfall, while others have remained overcast. The Meteorological Department has forecast that these conditions are likely to persist until April 9.
Yellow alert across multiple districts
A yellow alert has been issued for several districts, including Shivhar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura, Purnia, Katihar, Vaishali, Samastipur, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Munger, Banka and Jamui.
These regions are expected to experience rainfall accompanied by lightning and winds of 30–40 km/h.
In districts such as Gaya and Nalanda, the department has warned of imminent rainfall within short intervals, with wind speeds potentially reaching 40–50 km/h along with lightning activity.
Residents have been advised to remain cautious, while farmers have been urged to avoid working in open fields during thunderstorms.
Why the weather has changed
Meteorologists attribute the sudden shift to multiple interacting systems, including an active western disturbance over north India and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal.
The interaction of these systems has increased atmospheric moisture and instability, while a cyclonic circulation over the region is aiding cloud formation and triggering rainfall, thunderstorms and occasional squalls.
Erratic conditions across the state
Weather patterns over the past 24 hours have remained unpredictable. On Tuesday, temperatures in districts such as Kaimur crossed 38°C, with strong sunshine causing discomfort.
However, by evening, cloud cover and cool winds brought a noticeable drop in temperatures across several regions.
In South Bihar districts, including Gaya, Aurangabad and Rohtas, strong winds and rainfall are expected to provide temporary relief from the heat.
Outlook for Patna
In Patna, skies are expected to remain cloudy with intermittent rainfall over the next one to two days. Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are also likely.
Officials said the prevailing conditions may lead to a slight dip in temperatures, offering respite from the recent heatwave, though weather instability is expected to continue in the short term.
