Ara/Patna: The investigation into the alleged police encounter killing of Bharat Tiwari in Bihar’s Bhojpur district has entered a new phase with the arrest of Akshay Kumar, a jawan of the Bihar Special Task Force (STF).
Investigators said the arrest was made on the basis of scientific evidence and statements from eyewitnesses, making it the most significant investigative action taken in the case so far.
The case is being probed into allegations that Bharat Tiwari was killed in a staged police encounter. Authorities have not publicly confirmed the allegations, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Allegations Under Investigation
According to sources associated with the investigation, Bharat Tiwari had allegedly surrendered before the police and STF team on the day of the incident.
The investigators are examining claims that Akshay Kumar fired the first shot after the alleged surrender. It is further alleged that after Tiwari fell to the ground, he was shot three more times, resulting in his death.
These allegations have not been established in court, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence.
Investigation Gathered Pace After Family’s Demand
The probe gathered momentum after Bharat Tiwari’s family met Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary in Patna on July 24, seeking an impartial investigation and action against those responsible.
Following the meeting, the government initiated administrative action by removing the then Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sanjit Kumar from his post and transferring the then Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rajesh Kumar Sharma to the police lines.
Those administrative decisions were followed by expectations that criminal investigations could extend to members of the police team involved in the encounter.

Family Seeks Wider Action
Following Akshay Kumar’s arrest, members of Bharat Tiwari’s family described the development as an important step but said it was not sufficient.
They have demanded that murder cases be registered against all police officers and personnel allegedly involved in the encounter, arguing that accountability should not be limited to a single individual.
Probe May Expand
Investigators are expected to question the arrested STF personnel as part of the ongoing inquiry.
According to sources, fresh evidence emerging during interrogation could lead investigators to examine the role of other police officers and STF personnel who were present during the operation.
Authorities have not announced whether further arrests are imminent. The investigation remains in progress.
