Ara/Patna: Fresh details have emerged in the controversial Bharat Tiwari encounter case after the doctor who provided initial treatment to the Bhojpur resident described the nature and severity of the injuries he sustained before his death.
The latest development comes amid continuing demands for an independent investigation into the police encounter involving Bharat Tiwari, a resident of Bilauti village under Shahpur police station limits in Bhojpur district.
Doctor Describes Critical Condition
Dr M.H. Ansari, a surgeon at Ara Sadar Hospital, said Bharat Tiwari was brought to the hospital by Shahpur police after sustaining gunshot injuries.
In a video statement, Dr Ansari said the patient was in an extremely critical condition when he arrived and had lost a significant amount of blood.
According to the doctor, Tiwari had suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and lower abdominal region.
“When the injured youth was brought to us, no pulse could be detected and he was in profound shock. There was virtually no hope of survival at that stage,” Dr Ansari said.
He added that the medical team undertook emergency resuscitation efforts, after which Tiwari’s condition stabilised marginally and vital signs, including blood pressure, began to register.
Severe Vascular Damage Reported
Dr Ansari said the gunshot injuries had caused extensive damage to major blood vessels, severely affecting the body’s circulatory system.
He stated that the wounds were clearly caused by bullets and that the patient’s critical condition resulted from ruptured blood vessels and massive internal bleeding.
“The vascular injuries caused severe blood loss, pushing the patient into deep shock,” he said.
Given the seriousness of the injuries, doctors referred Tiwari to a higher medical centre for advanced treatment, stating that the required level of care could not be provided at the facility.

Doctor Says No Assessment Possible On Mental Condition
The doctor’s statement also addressed claims that surfaced after the encounter suggesting that Bharat Tiwari was mentally unstable.
Asked whether police personnel had informed doctors about any mental health issues, Dr Ansari said no such information was provided.
He added that Tiwari was almost completely unconscious upon arrival, making any communication impossible.
“The patient was unable to speak. In such circumstances, it is not possible to assess whether a person is mentally unstable or otherwise. One cannot comment on someone’s mental condition unless they are conscious and able to communicate,” the doctor said.
Encounter Continues To Spark Controversy
The encounter has remained at the centre of political and public debate since Bharat Tiwari’s death.
His family has repeatedly alleged that the encounter was staged and has demanded action against the police personnel involved. Police officials, however, have maintained that the operation was lawful and justified.
The Bihar government has already ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident, while political leaders from multiple parties have visited the family and called for a transparent investigation.

The doctor’s account has renewed public discussion around the case and is likely to become an important element in ongoing inquiries into the encounter.
Supporters of Tiwari and several social groups argue that all aspects of the incident should be examined impartially, while authorities continue to defend the official version of events.
As investigations proceed, medical evidence, forensic findings and witness testimony are expected to play a crucial role in establishing the sequence of events that led to Bharat Tiwari’s death.
