Patna, April 10, 2026: The district administration in Patna has taken a strict stand against arbitrary fee collection by private schools following a surge in complaints from parents. The District Magistrate has made it clear that any violation of rules in the name of education will invite stringent action.
Over the past few months, parents have alleged that several private schools were charging additional amounts under various heads apart from admission fees, tuition fees, development charges and annual fees. In many cases, schools were also accused of not clearly disclosing the complete fee structure, leading to growing dissatisfaction among guardians.
Taking serious note of the complaints, Patna District Magistrate Dr. Thiyagarajan S.M. directed officials to initiate immediate action. Clear instructions have been issued to the District Education Officer (DEO) and all Sub-Divisional Officers (SDOs) to closely monitor private schools and ensure compliance with state government norms.
The District Magistrate emphasised that no school is allowed to increase fees arbitrarily. Charging any additional amount without prior approval has been termed completely unacceptable. Schools have been directed to maintain full transparency and publicly disclose their fee structures.
As per the new directives, all private schools must display detailed information about their fees on notice boards as well as on their official websites. This is aimed at ensuring that parents have access to clear and accurate information, reducing confusion and disputes.
Officials have also been instructed to act promptly on complaints. Any grievance raised by parents must be investigated without delay, and strict action will be taken against institutions found guilty. Penalties may include fines, administrative action or other legal measures.
“Compromising with the interests of students and parents will not be tolerated. Imposing unnecessary financial burden in the name of education is completely wrong and will be stopped,” said Dr. Thiyagarajan.
The administration also stated that the Fee Regulation Committee will remain active in addressing complaints and reviewing fee-related issues. The committee will examine cases and recommend action where necessary, ensuring greater transparency and accountability in the fee determination process.
The move is expected to bring relief to parents and curb the long-standing issue of arbitrary fee collection, while promoting a more transparent and regulated education system in the district.
