Patna: Pushpam Priya Chaudhary, known for her unconventional political style and reformist vision, has re-entered the Bihar Assembly elections with a striking all-black look and a renewed call for change. Contesting again from Darbhanga under her self-founded Plurals Party, she has vowed to remove her signature black mask only if she wins a seat.

Educated at the University of Sussex and the London School of Economics, Pushpam represents a new generation of politicians in Bihar — one that seeks to break away from the entrenched caste and community-driven dynamics that dominate the state’s politics.

“Plurals means all people — irrespective of caste or religion — working together for development,” Pushpam said in an interview with NDTV. “I don’t know why politicians wear white, so I wear black.”

From Bureaucratic Advisor to Political Challenger

Before her political debut, Pushpam served as an advisor in Bihar’s tourism and health departments. Her party, The Plurals, was launched in 2020 with the ambitious slogan of “Bihar deserves better” and her own declaration as a chief ministerial candidate. That year, the party contested 148 seats, but this time, it has expanded to all 243 constituencies, with half the tickets reserved for women.

Her political lineage runs deep: her grandfather, Professor Umakant Chaudhary, was a founding member of the Samata Party and a close associate of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while her uncle, Vinay Kumar Chaudhary, is a JDU leader and former MLA from Benipur.

Challenging Bihar’s Political Traditions

Pushpam’s political narrative is positioned as an alternative to Bihar’s traditional power blocs. The black-clad leader stresses education, transparency, and gender balance in governance. She describes Akhilesh Yadav as a “more serious” leader than Rahul Gandhi, and credits Nitish Kumar as “Bihar’s best Chief Minister so far.”

She also took a veiled jab at political strategist Prashant Kishor, advising him to “stay in the strategist’s lane” rather than pursuing active politics.

A Test of Influence in 2025

With her “City” election symbol and expanded reach, The Plurals Party aims to carve a space in Bihar’s crowded political field. Whether her technocratic, reform-driven message can resonate with voters accustomed to identity-based politics remains to be seen.

For now, Pushpam Priya’s black attire continues to make her stand out in a political landscape dominated by familiar faces — and her promise of a new Bihar faces its toughest electoral test yet.
