Patna : Railway connectivity across Bihar is set for a major expansion, with double rail lines proposed across six districts as part of the Delhi-Guwahati multi-tracking project. The initiative is aimed at strengthening rail connectivity towards the Northeast while improving train operations along the busy corridor.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared details of the project and the proposed route, highlighting the multi-tracking plans between Delhi and Guwahati. The expansion is expected to increase the capacity of the railway network and help reduce congestion on key sections.
Six Bihar districts to benefit
The proposed track-doubling work will cover routes passing through West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Supaul and Araria.
The project includes the route from Narkatiaganj towards Araria, with important railway sections such as Raxaul, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Saraigarh included in the broader plan.
The additional tracks are expected to improve connectivity between these districts and provide smoother rail access towards major destinations, including Delhi and Guwahati.
Delhi-Guwahati rail connectivity to get a boost
The Delhi-Guwahati multi-tracking project is designed to increase railway capacity along one of the country’s important rail corridors. More tracks will allow trains to operate with greater flexibility and could help address congestion caused by increasing passenger and freight traffic.
For Bihar, the project could provide better connectivity between northern districts and major destinations in the eastern and northeastern parts of the country.
DPR work underway on key sections
According to the details shared by the Railway Minister, work is already underway on the Delhi-Gonda section, while the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Gonda-Gorakhpur section has been prepared.
The DPR for the New Jalpaiguri-Guwahati section is also being prepared. Track-doubling is proposed between Gorakhpur and Alubari as part of the wider multi-tracking plan.
Seven busy rail routes may get four tracks
Indian Railways is also preparing to expand capacity on seven of its busiest rail routes, with plans to develop them into four-track corridors. The expansion of around 11,000 km of railway tracks is expected to accommodate more trains and ease pressure caused by rising passenger numbers and freight movement.
For Bihar, the proposed doubling across six districts could improve connectivity, support faster movement of goods and passengers, and provide a stronger rail link towards Delhi and the Northeast.
