Patna: Bihar Advocate General P.K. Shahi has resigned from his post and submitted his resignation to the state government, bringing an end to his tenure as the state’s highest legal officer.
The Bihar government has not officially disclosed the reasons behind Shahi’s resignation. However, the development has triggered discussions across legal and political circles, given his long association with the state administration and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Long Association with Bihar Politics and Governance
P.K. Shahi has remained an influential figure in Bihar’s political and legal landscape for decades. Before taking over as Advocate General, he served as Bihar’s Education Minister in the Nitish Kumar-led government and played an active role in shaping policy and governance.
His transition from politics to the state’s top legal office was seen as a move that brought both administrative experience and legal expertise to the position.
Appointed in 2023 After Lalit Kishore’s Exit
Shahi was appointed Bihar’s Advocate General on January 16, 2023, following the resignation of former Advocate General Lalit Kishore.
At the time, the Nitish Kumar government reposed confidence in him by entrusting him with the responsibility of serving as the principal legal advisor to the state government and representing Bihar before the Patna High Court.
Key Role in High-Profile Legal Matters
During his tenure, Shahi regularly represented the Bihar government in important cases before the Patna High Court and advised the state on a range of legal and constitutional issues.
His sudden resignation has therefore attracted considerable attention within the legal fraternity, where he was regarded as one of the government’s most trusted legal voices.
Search for New Advocate General Begins
With Shahi stepping down, the process of appointing Bihar’s next Advocate General is expected to gain momentum.
Government sources have not indicated any immediate replacement, but an announcement regarding the new Advocate General is likely in the coming days.
