Patna: Bihar is preparing to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) from August, as the state government seeks to reduce congestion, improve road safety and automate traffic enforcement.
The system will be implemented across all district headquarters, including Patna, with around 500 of the state’s busiest intersections selected for the first phase.
AI Cameras To Monitor Traffic Violations
Under the new system, AI-enabled surveillance cameras will automatically detect overspeeding, red-light violations, lane indiscipline, and the use of helmets and seatbelts.
The project will deploy Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras alongside Red Light Violation Detection Systems (RLVDS) to identify offending vehicles.
Once a violation is detected, the system will automatically read the vehicle’s registration number and generate an e-challan, reducing the need for manual enforcement.
Green Corridors For Emergency Vehicles
The ITMS will also be designed to prioritise emergency services.
When ambulances, fire engines or other emergency vehicles approach an intersection, traffic signals will automatically switch to green, creating a green corridor to speed up their movement.
Officials say the feature is expected to reduce response times during medical emergencies and disaster situations.
Patna Among First Cities To Get AI Network
In Patna, AI-powered cameras will be installed at more than 50 key intersections, including Kargil Chowk, Dakbungalow, Boring Road, Bailey Road and Hartali Mor.
The rollout will also cover Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Bihar Sharif, Gaya, Darbhanga and Purnia.
Beyond urban areas, ITMS cameras and sensors will be installed along major highways and expressways, including the Patna–Bakhtiyarpur–Mokama National Highway, Patna–Dobhi–Gaya National Highway, Patna–Muzaffarpur National Highway, and the Amas–Darbhanga Expressway.
Rollout To Begin In August
According to Raj Kumar, Secretary of the Bihar Transport Department, preparations for the statewide rollout are underway at both departmental and field levels.
“The process of integrating AI cameras will begin next month,” he said.
The government expects the technology-driven system to improve traffic management, strengthen enforcement of road safety rules and reduce accidents by enabling real-time monitoring of vehicle movement across the state.
