Gaya: An assistant sub-inspector posted in Gaya district died by suicide on Monday after allegedly consuming sulphas tablets while on duty, police said. The incident has sparked shock and concern within the police force.
ASI Amarendra Kumar Yadav, who had recently returned to work on November 28 after a period of leave, was serving at the Rampur police station when his condition suddenly worsened. Colleagues rushed him to Magadh Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead during treatment.
Dinesh Bahadur Singh, the station house officer (SHO) at Rampur police station, said officers realised Yadav had consumed sulphas when they questioned him after noticing his deteriorating health. “He was on duty. While on duty, his condition suddenly deteriorated, and the case of consuming sulphas came to light. He was admitted to the hospital, where he died during treatment,” Singh said.
Yadav was a resident of Aulha village in Purnia district. According to police, he informed medical staff that he had ingested the poisonous substance when he was first admitted.
Preliminary inquiries suggest domestic issues may have contributed to the incident, although police stressed that no formal conclusion has been reached. “The actual reasons will become clear only after the family members arrive,” Singh said.
The body has been placed in the postmortem unit of Magadh Medical College, where it will remain until Yadav’s family arrives from Purnia. A postmortem examination is expected to be conducted thereafter.
Police have launched an investigation under the direction of senior officials and say they are examining all possible angles. The suicide has reignited concerns about stress and mental health issues faced by personnel within the force.
