Patna: The Bihar government has decided not to construct proposed 620-seat Atal Kala Bhawans in Patna, Jehanabad and Supaul, saying there is no requirement for additional cultural infrastructure in these districts.
The decision was taken by the Department of Art, Culture and Youth Affairs as part of its ongoing programme to develop cultural facilities across the state.
According to the department, Atal Kala Bhawans and Atal Kala Kendras have already been completed or are in the final stages of construction in 20 districts of Bihar.
Large Auditoriums in Champaran and Muzaffarpur
The government is developing larger Atal Kala Bhawans with a seating capacity of 2,000 in West Champaran, East Champaran and Muzaffarpur.
Construction has been completed in West Champaran and East Champaran, while work is continuing in Muzaffarpur.
Seven Districts Already Have Operational Buildings
Atal Kala Bhawans with a seating capacity of 600 have been completed in Darbhanga, Saharsa, Munger, Purnia, Gaya, Saran and Begusarai.
The facilities are expected to provide artists and cultural organisations with modern venues for performances, exhibitions and community events.
Construction Underway in 11 Districts
The state government said construction work is progressing rapidly in several districts.
While 630-seat auditoriums are being built in Lakhisarai and Banka, 620-seat Atal Kala Bhawans are under construction in Sheikhpura, Arwal, Buxar, Kaimur, Siwan, Araria, Nawada, Sheohar, Nalanda, Aurangabad and Jamui.
Work Likely to Start Soon in Nine Districts
Land has already been identified and handed over for projects in Khagaria, Katihar, Kishanganj, Madhubani, Bhojpur, Gopalganj, Rohtas, Samastipur and Madhepura.
Construction in these districts is expected to begin after the completion of administrative formalities.
Land Shortage Delays Three Projects
The department said work has not started in Vaishali, Bhagalpur and Sitamarhi because suitable land has not yet been made available.
Officials are awaiting land allocation before moving ahead with the construction process.
Boost for Local Art and Culture
Once completed, the Atal Kala Bhawans will provide modern infrastructure for theatre, music, dance and other cultural activities.
The facilities are also expected to help local artists access better rehearsal and performance spaces within their own districts, strengthening Bihar’s regional cultural ecosystem.
