Bagaha/Bettiah: A routine cleaning drive ahead of the auspicious Chhath Puja in Madhopur village, Gaunaha block in West Champaran district, turned into a terrifying ordeal on Monday after a colossal crocodile suddenly surfaced from the depths of the village pond.
The reptile, estimated by officials to be a staggering 16 feet long and weighing approximately 2.5 quintals (250 kg), had been hiding in the muddy waters where workers were preparing the ghats, or steps, used for the religious festival.
Narrow Escape for Worker
The incident escalated quickly when the massive aquatic predator ambushed one of the cleaning workers. Fortunately, the worker reacted instantly, managing to retreat just in time and escaping a potential fatal attack. His frantic warning shouts immediately alerted the village, and news of the giant creature spread rapidly, plunging the community into fear and excitement.
Forest Department Launches Complex Rescue
The sheer size of the crocodile posed a difficult challenge for the rescue team. Led by Ranger Vijay Prasad, the Forest Department team rushed to the scene following frantic calls from the villagers.
The complex operation required meticulous planning and heavy effort. After nearly six hours of intense work, the forest personnel successfully subdued and safely captured the enormous animal. The successful rescue effort brought a huge wave of relief to the anxious residents.
Hundreds of villagers gathered to witness the rare sight, capturing photos and videos of the massive reptile on their mobile phones before it was transported away. Ranger Vijay Prasad issued a public advisory, urging residents to maintain a safe distance from such aquatic creatures and to never attempt self-rescue or engagement.
Officials confirmed the rescued crocodile will be safely relocated and released into the protected waters of the Gandak River in Bagaha, its natural habitat. The villagers, many of whom said they had never witnessed such a massive crocodile before, are relieved the danger has passed just as they prepare for their biggest annual festival.
