Patna: Passengers travelling by bus in Bihar are set to pay more for their journeys, as the state government has proposed a significant increase in fares. The Transport Department has suggested raising rates by 10 to 15 percent, which is expected to affect millions of daily commuters and long-distance travellers. Ordinary buses, deluxe services, AC buses, and premium Volvo coaches are all included in the plan, meaning nearly every passenger will feel the impact. For people who travel to work or school every day, even a small rise can make a noticeable difference to their monthly expenses.
The proposal has been prepared under Section 67 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and has been approved by the Governor. Citizens now have a one-month period to share their suggestions or objections, meaning the hike is not final yet. However, the government has made it clear that an increase is likely, citing rising fuel costs and maintenance expenses as reasons for the change. Officials have stressed that this move aims to make bus services sustainable while still providing safe and reliable travel options for passengers.
Under the new rates, ordinary buses will cost Rs 1.71 per kilometre for trips up to 50 kilometres, while deluxe buses will charge Rs 1.96 per kilometre. For passengers seeking comfort, AC buses will now cost Rs 2.30 per kilometre, and premium Volvo or Mercedes coaches will charge up to Rs 2.88 per kilometre. Even though the rate per kilometre may slightly decrease for long-distance travel, the overall cost of a journey will increase, making travel more expensive for everyone.
Urban bus services will also see changes. The first four kilometres of travel will now be counted as a single stage, with each additional two kilometres forming a new stage. The initial four kilometres will cost Rs 1.84 per kilometre. The government has also introduced strict rules to protect passengers, requiring all buses to display fare charts and maintain complaint registers. Any overcharging, overloading, or other violations will face strict penalties, ensuring that passengers can travel safely and fairly under the new system.
