Madhepura: Three people have died and one remains missing after a car plunged off a bridge into a river in Bihar’s Madhepura district in the early hours of Saturday, police said.
The accident occurred at around 1am near Arar Ghat bridge, when the vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed, struck an electric pole, broke through the bridge railing and fell approximately 20 feet into the river below. Four friends were inside the car at the time.
Police and local authorities recovered the bodies of three victims, identified as Ghanshyam Kumar, 28, from Station Chowk in Madhepura; Ankit Kumar, 26, a resident of Saharsa district; and Vasant Kumar, 23, from Saur Bazar area. The fourth occupant has not yet been identified and remains missing, with search operations ongoing.
According to officials, two bodies were found inside the heavily damaged vehicle, while a third was recovered nearby. The car’s windows were shattered and airbags had deployed on impact, indicating the severity of the crash.
Preliminary reports suggest the group had left Station Chowk around 9pm and were returning to Madhepura from Gwalpara after attending a fair when the incident took place.
Ankit Kumar, one of the deceased, held BEd and CTET qualifications and had been preparing for the Bihar Public Service Commission teacher recruitment examination. Vasant Kumar was a second-year BEd student, while Ghanshyam Kumar was driving the vehicle.
Police from Arar station reached the site soon after being alerted and initiated rescue efforts. The wrecked car has been pulled from the river, and the bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. Authorities said efforts to locate the missing person were continuing, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is under way.
