Patna: A growing trend of online gaming among children in Bihar has sparked alarm after a recent study by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) revealed widespread financial and psychological impacts.
According to the report, around 25 lakh children in the state are now suffering from mental health issues linked to online gaming. Over the past year, children lost an estimated Rs 5 crore through online betting and gaming, with some reportedly taking loans or stealing money from home to continue playing.
The study, conducted following the central government’s ban on 155 online games, surveyed 35 lakh children aged 10 to 18 between August 25 and 30. Of these, roughly 70% reported experiencing mental stress after being unable to access games, highlighting the addictive nature of online gambling among minors.
Before the ban, the commission found that 35 lakh children from Bihar regularly engaged in online gaming for monetary gains. Experts and parents have raised concerns that children are increasingly prioritising gaming over education, with negative effects on academic performance and growing incidences of depression linked to gaming losses.
The Department of Telecommunications implemented the ban on online gaming ten days ago, but the report indicates that many children continue to seek ways to play, underscoring the challenge of curbing addiction and protecting mental health.
